Fly Fisherman Wearing Smith Longfin Sunglasses

Best Fly Fishing Sunglasses in 2023 · Buyer’s Guide

Choosing the best fly fishing sunglasses can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to the sport, but it doesn’t have to be.

The top sunglass manufacturers (Costa, Smith, Maui Jim, Others) have a broad product catalog, sometimes with over 100 different models to choose from. Add in other factors like lens material/color, frame shape/size, and price. A simple shopping experience can get complicated quickly.

Fortunately for you, we are here to help. We put in the hard work. We read the other review sites, delved into the product catalog of the leading sunglass companies, and read all of the customer reviews.

As a result, we have put together 12 great options for the best fly fishing sunglasses to get you started.

With that said, Let’s get to it!

Choose Frame & Lens Based On Activity

Before we get too far down the river, let’s get one thing out of the way. Looking for the best single pair of fly fishing sunglasses might be a bit of a fool’s errand, much like trying to find the best tool in the garage for everything you would need a tool to do.

As you know, not every day on the water is the same, and asking one pair of sunglasses to be the perfect pair for every day is a big ask.

While frame construction, color, and fit are essential, the lens is the most significant variation in performance fly fishing sunglasses. For more information on lens choice, read our recent review on choosing the best polarized lens for different fly fishing conditions.

8 Important Considerations For Fly Fishing Sunglasses

The human eye is unique, incredibly versatile, and complex. It makes sense that a proper pair of sunglasses perfectly suited to protect and enhance our eye site would have a little tech built-in, and that is the case. And that tech goes well beyond just the eyes. It involves the face and head too. There are at least eight critical factors to consider when choosing the right sunglasses for your eager fly fishing eyes.

  1. Frame Fit: Different face shapes to consider.
  2. Frame Color: Balance style, coverage, performance.
  3. Polarization / UV: Yes, always.
  4. Lens Color: Multiple colors, each with unique advantages.
  5. Visual Clarity: Glass outperforms polycarbonate.
  6. Weight / Durability: Glass is more durable, polycarbonate weights less.
  7. Style: Color, design, performance, durability.
  8. Price: You might need more than one pair to cover all conditions.

Open Water & Bright Conditions

Blue polarized fly fishing lenses work best when fishing in open water and consistently bright conditions. An example scenario would be off-shore fishing on open, reflective water or an ocean or lake on a clear sunny day. Blue lenses help define contours and enhance color perception. We think they also look pretty cool.

In addition to blue lenses, non-reflective frames that offer full coverage are ideal. The best flyfishing sunglasses in this category will have larger lenses and black wrap-around frames to completely block light leakage. Other common features are vented nose pads and sweat channels to reduce lens fog.

Costa Blackfin PRO

An enhanced version of one of Costa’s most trusted and well-loved frames, the Blackfin PRO builds off the original look, polarized lens, and fits with six new angler-approved additions to keep you on the water longer.

Costa Fanatil Pro Customer Reviews

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
These are just the creme of the crop. I tell ya I’ve owned em all, Oakley, Maui Jim’s, ect. ect. And these are DURABLE I got the 580g lens and the coating is awesome and hard to scratch, and easily the clearest lenses I’ve ever looked through. Now I put on some cheap sunglasses and feel like I’m in a fish bowl and reach for my Costas once again. The polarization and filtering of light is absolutely amazing for days on the bright ocean and reflictive water and snow. No more squints headaches.

Very excited to get this pair of Fantails! After finally getting sick of plastic lenses in Oakleys, scratching when you breath on them, I’m all about the 580G. These are the real deal. The glass lenses are etched with 580, the plastic ones say 580P, and the prescription lenses have the Costa logo and 580. SportRX has a video explaining this. I think these look great and the fit is fantastic! This seller has these at a great price, don’t hesitate!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
These Costa Fantail plastic frame blue mirror lens sunglasses are an excellent choice for serious fishermen who are also athletic and need reliable yet practical and truly effective eye protection. I have been wearing them for bone fishing for years and absolutely will always buy Costa. I had to send my last pair in after I ran over them—breaking both the right lens and frame. For the cost of shipping only, Costa mailed me a brand new pair 3 years after the original purchase with no strings or questions whatsoever. They are lightweight, comfortable, and I can see into the water—so well that I was able to fetch a gold spoon I accidentally lost in the weeds.

MRC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great lenses, solid frames, quality all the way around. When you get to this level of sunglasses there is not much that separates the top tier lenses from Smith, Costa or Oakley. Costa lenses, 580g..glass, are lightweight and awesome. Lifetime warranty is comforting. Have only had for a week but researched and these should be solid. Buy on sale or though other means. At full retail they are strongly priced. Good solid buy with Costa.

Maui Jim Barrier Reef Customer Reviews

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I purchased these glasses in the Blue/Turquoise frame and the Blue Hawaii lens. I just love them. The colors are amazing and they are really flattering on my narrow/medium face. I do not give them five stars because they sit a little low on my face and rest on my cheeks at the bottom. Nevertheless, I bought some self-adhesive nose pads and raised them a little bit.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just received MyMaui Barrier Reef yesterday. My 3rd pair of MJ and love them like the others. These wrap just the right way and are very comfortable and light to wear. The clarity and color view is explicit. You’ll love these and they look great once put on. The prices of MJ are a lil bit up there but DEFINITELY worth it. These glasses last forever when cared for in the right way. My 1st lasted 11yrs until my car accident. My Blue w/Turquoise frames and Natural Grey lens really show the exact color as we should see it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So after looking at a lot of different sunglasses such as Oakley’s and Costa del Mar’s which I’ve all previously owned I decided on the Maui Jim’s Barrier Reef. These are probably the best sunglasses I’ve ever owned, they fit perfectly are lightweight and very comfortable to wear plus they look great. I’ve always had an issue finding a pair that both fit comfortable and didn’t look to big for my face, I’m actually thinking of getting a 2nd pair with the Hawaii Blue Polarized lens for fishing and retire my costa del mars as aside from being much lighter they also stay on much better.

Maui Jim are an amazing brand, i have had sunglasses from a few big name brands and they don’t compare to Maui Jim well worth the money.

SIGHT FISHING & IN SHORE

Green polarized fly fishing lenses work best when sight fishing and inshore. An example scenario would be a pond, stream, or river when the sun is still good mid-morning through late afternoon. Green lenses dim glare while brightening shadows and are a great multi-use color. Like the blue lenses, green also look great for everyday use.

Budget-conscious note: Choose something in this category if you can only afford one pair of sunglasses. Green lenses will cover you in most cases when fishing and still look good for casual wear.

Costa Tuna Alley

Named after the legendary 15-mile stretch of sand cutting through the deep blue Bahamian waters where the Bluefin tuna migrate north, these Costa Angler sunglasses are created to uncover and showcase the famous, underwater fish highway. With integral hinges, a patented vent system, polarized and made from tough-as-nails nylon, these men’s performance fishing sunglasses won’t be missing much.

Costa Tuna Alley Customer Reviews

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
in the current market there’s nothing similar, they’re by far the best sunglasses I have used in my entire life, and I have used many ( from rayban, maui jim, okley and many more brands ) Costa del Mar has no competition or even close second, they’re a bit dark at first because they’re designed to protect the eyes from the reflection of the sun and the glare in the most extreme conditions, but you get used to it in a few minutes. I use it daily for driving, jogging, etc. I don’t know how I could recommend these sunglasses even more, Costa del Mar is the best in the world ! Bravo

C. Navone

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bought these glasses specifically for fishing as I needed to be able to sight-fish while fly fishing in Colorado. I’ve always been hesitant to purchase high end glasses because i either break or lose them constantly. These stay in my pack and they are the best glasses i’ve ever worn. They are super comfortable, have great polarization, are not too dark, and keep outside light to a minimum when scoping fish. I’ve had a pair of Costa 580p glasses in the past and the 580G is a much better product, though there is a noticeable weight difference.

Brays

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Costas have me a complete believer in their glass lens sunglasses now. That’s all I will wear from now on. I work on boats in sunny hawaiian waters and these things see the bottom when so many other sunglasses will not. They also are incredibly scratch resistant and resistant to that painful streaking of the lens color so many competitors have issues with. I’ve lost so many other sunglasses to spray sunscreen but these will never do that because the glass is actually colored itself making these so amazing. I promise you I wear these hard and they are tough as nails. Also the Amazon ones are completely legit just much cheaper then you get in stores. Buy them you won’t regret it

Dan Hasler

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I finally pulled the trigger and bought the Tuna Alley with 580g Blue Mirror. I’ve been wearing Oakley’s for the last 15 years…when I put the Costa’s on…It was amazing. My eyes were totally relaxed…not even a squint yet more light seemed to be coming in. I haven’t been in the Ocean yet but they really paid off just looking at a manatee in a nearby canal. I’m super happy with the fit with my wide face and overall coverage. I don’t even need to move the car’s sun-visor to the side anymore. Go for it!

A Prince

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I needed these sunglasses for a trip to Florida when I broke my pair of Ocean Waves (those were good glasses too but their customer service is now substandard) and needed them in a hurry. I was so excited to not only see that they made it to my house before my trip but actually arrived a day earlier than promised. I am very grateful for finding merchants like this who actually care. Thank-you! Oh, and the glasses are beautiful. They are very light and cover my eyes very well. The clarity is unbelievable. They are so comfortable I have actually found myself driving with them still on when my headlights come on. I can’t say enough about glasses or about Great Lakes Outpost.

These are excellent polarized sunglasses. Great clarity. They are very lightweight and give great eye coverage for being on the water. They are a perfect fit. I have a small face and they stay on perfectly and are not too tight. I highly recommend these glasses. I also received sooner than the estimated time so I was very happy. I highly recommend the glasses and the seller

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lenses are amazing! Definitely the clearest I have ever used. Have had Gatorz, loved them but the frame did not agree with my skin. Had Gargoyles, but they were older ones and the lenses kept breaking. These are great, clear and light. cannot even tell I am wearing them. Get them. they have so many styles, i will be trying more. the only issue with these, is that they fog up in the middle a lot, will see if this continues.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve collected more than a few pairs of sunglasses- these frames fit the best; they comfortably stay put. The blue lenses also do an excellent job of blocking the intensity of the rays. They don’t enhance like a red lens; but they give you a clear crisp perspective.

I have a big face not all sunglasses fit me well. These Maui’s are for that type of face. They are a full wrap on my eyes with this said you must find the correct fitment to avoid having fogged lenses.

Luis P.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love these for fishing, beach going , and just even driving. They are much lighter than Costa of which I have several pair. The clarity of the lenses is awesome as well as the fit. The only thing I’ll say negative and it’s not a big deal is that they cost the same-as do Costas everywhere you go, so I got a second pair of Maui Jim’s that I tried on at a Sunglass place-same price, but I got a nice cloth bag to keep them in so I don’t have to tote the case as I do with my first pair from Amazon-again no big deal though. try them-you’ll like them!

LOW LIGHT & CLOUDY CONDITIONS

Yellow polarized fly fishing lenses work best when fishing in low light and cloudy conditions and are perfect early morning, late in the day, or under cloud cover. An example scenario would be early morning lake, stream, or pond fishing hooking those last few big ones as the sunset is going down. Yello lenses provide a flashlight effect and enhance dark light to make everything brighter than it is. In addition, they also filter blue light.

Yellow lenses are not a good choice for a “do it all” pair of sunglasses. Definitely not a good choice for bright conditions or light-sensitive eyes. You might look a little goofy wearing these lenses around town. With that in mind, all of the fly fishing sunglass choices below also come in a variety of lenses so don’t count them out for other conditions.

Costa Santiago

The Untangled frame style with the most coverage and “fishability” takes its name from Chile’s capital. Hooding and side shields help keep your eyes free from light leaks and focused on the water. Keeper-ready temples and Hydrolite® rubber grips are designed to keep you fishing no matter how rough it gets out there.

And to ensure a future full of fish for our and future generations, Santiago is made from 97% recycled fishing nets. The other 3% is a performance additive that is designed to help you catch 100% of the fish you chase. Santiago is as good for fishing as it is for our oceans.

Great shades, chromapop is where it’s at! The matte gravy on copper is a cool look. I also have Costa and like them both. I find the Smith lenses (plastic) to be better quality and sharper, but the frame quality, specifically QC, to be better with Costa. For glass lenses, there is no contest. Maui Jim wins by a mile!

I bought these and have been on the water a few times with them. The lenses are amazing. Cut glare, give good vision in the water and the frames are light. For me, they ride a bit low, which is a little bothersome, but I guess that’s just how they fit me. If not for how they fit me in particular, I would give them a 5.

Great sunglasses for me. I am as petite as they come but I love these sunglasses for boating and regular wear!
